Child Care Assistance

Child reading

Child care assistance programs (funded by the Child Care and Development Fund) are available in every state. They are managed by agencies chosen by the government (called “lead agencies”) that make decisions about eligibility, benefits, and what to call the program in that state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Program Benefits   Am I eligible?   How do I apply?

This program helps families with low incomes pay for child care. If you are eligible for assistance, you’ll have to pay a portion of the cost of child care, but what you pay will be based on how much your family makes (sliding scale fees). The percentage you’re required to pay will vary depending on where you live.

You may be eligible for assistance if:

  • Your child is 13 or younger, or has a disability You have a low to moderate income (income requirements vary by state)
  • Your state may have additional requirements.

Contact your local agency for more information.

In some states, families can apply by telephone or mail. Contact your local agency to find out what you need to do to apply in your state. In many communities there also are child care resource and referral (CCR&R) agencies that can provide information about how to apply for child care assistance. Find a CCR&R agency near you or call (toll-free) 1-800-424-2246.

Hello,
My name is Seville Jackson.
I am 25 year old young mother of two children.
I have been struggling and trying to get my GED to go to school for criminal justice but i can afford childcare and i can get assistance from the state because they said that i will need a letter from my GED instructor stating my test scores and my class schedule.
I have tried getting a letter for that but they said that if i was going to be doing online classes while mu husbands works during the week then they cant provide a letter to me for that because they said that they can get in bog trouble if the state calls them and find out that im not in class. My husband works and he only has wed or thurs. off during the week and sometimes he have to work every other weekend. So until i get some kind of childcare i cant go to ged classes or find work. I really need some kind of help.

This is a good program for parent who are having a low income that wants to work and wanted to intrust their children who can take care of them while the parents are out for work. This is also like a children's non-profit organization that takes care of abandoned , street children in the world.

I AM WRITING FOR MY DAUGHTER SHE IS A SINGLE MOTHER OF TWO CHILDREN. SHE IS ALSO PREGNANT AND DUE FOR C-SECTION OCTOBER THE 3RD. HER CHILDREN ARE CURRENTLY IN DAYCARE WHICH DOUBLES AS A PRESCHOOL. THE OLDEST TURNED 5 IN AUG. AND THE YOUNGER 3 IN AUG. THE PUBLIC ABC PRESCHOOL DOES NOT HAVE PLACEMENT. SHE CURRENTLY PAYS 350.00 EVERY TWO WEEKS. SHE IS A CNA AND IS CONSIDERED LOW-INCOME. SHE IS WORKING UP TILL DATE OF SURGERY ,AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE, IN ORDER TO KEEP HER BOYS IN PRESCHOOL AS LONG SS POSSIBLE. WHEN SHE TAKES MATERNITY LEAVE SHE WILL BE UNABLE TO KEEP BOYS IN DAYCARE AS SHE IS STRUGGLING TO PAY NOW. I HELP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BUT AM UNABLE TO PAY THE FULL EXPENSE. WHEN THE NEW BABY COMES SHE WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO QUIT WORK AND GO ON WELFARE AS SHE WILL BE UNABLE TO PAY THE EXTRA DAYCARE EXPENSE. SHE HAS BEEN ON THE LIST FOR DAYCARE ASSISTANCE SINCE 02/2010. TODAY WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE FUNDS FOR LOW INCOME ONLY TEENAGERS AND GRANDPARENTS. I FEEL THAT THIS WILL BE A GRAVE INJUSTICE TO THE BOYS TO NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO PRESCHOOL AND FOR MY DAUGHTER TO HAVE TO QUIT HER JOB. IS THERE ANY PLACE OUT THERE THAT WE CAN APPLY FOR DAYCARE ASSISTANCE?

Hello. I am a stay at home mom with 2 kids and one on the way. I want to go back to school for Dental Hygiene next year, but childcare for 3 children is so expensive. I have looked into the Missouri Childcare Assistance Program, but my husband makes too much for us to qualify for any assistance. I also saw that you can have childcare assistance if you qualify for the Pell Grant, however assistance would only be given for part-time childcare. The program is 40 hours a week during my husbands work hours, so again, I don't qualify. I was wondering if you had any other options for me to look into. I agree with everyone else in that there are people who aren't trying to better themselves and they get all the assistance from the government they need and then there are others, like us, that would like assistance for a limited time can't get it. I would really appreciate any help you can give me!

The system does seem unbalanced in this matter. I suggest calling your local health dept and finding out where the nearest "crisis childcare" center is. If you are receiving state assistance, you can use this center for things like a job interview or medical appointmets you don't want to drag your kids to (like the OB). I had to use the crisis center for a job interview. The facilities are really clean and the ladies there are nice. 6 weeks after my baby was born, I was offered a job to start the following month. When I looked into the cost of childcare for an infant and my two other children, daycare would be a whopping $1660 a month. My job would only pay me $1200. When I asked the state how much they would pay in assistance, they said there wasn't a way to tell until I was actually working. I would just stay home, since it seems cheaper, but like you, there are other bills and necessities that need to be paid. At this point, I am going to take the job and pray that the state will help with the majority of childcare expense.
